Cognitive development does not stop for most people at 16 , maturity may lol but not cognitive development…. That is biologically untrue. Cognitive development refers to the natural neurobiological processes that occur throughout development ie. like a child’s ability to form schemas , later the ability to conceptualize abstract reasoning etc . Cognitive development implies much more like literally the development of all mental processes like working memory , visuospatial memory etc , In essence, cognition is the mental machinery that allows us to understand - to say most adults never fully mature cognitively is untrue - we can LITERALLY see cognitive processes through the uses of FMRI as it measures changes in blood flow, which are a proxy for neural activity, and can be used to map brain activation and track the sequence of cognitive processes over time, even though it has a lower temporal resolution than EEG.

I’ve noticed this! I’m 36 and work with other 36 year olds who are more advanced in their career but still so immature, very performative in their job, doing everything for external validation and I just watch them and think it must be so exhausting. I think I personally must have experienced an “ego death” from repeated severe trauma and have had to find ways to function and be ok outside of the usual, typical “structure” that people exist in, because all of my goals, dreams and expectations of life have basically gone down the drain. So now I just meditate every day and try to just remain focused on the present because it’s the only thing that’s guaranteed. So I have a hunch that further development probably usually involves a lot of pain and hardship for most people. If you don’t have difficult life situations, what motive do you have to break out of your current level of existence?

correction, most women. men continue mentally maturing into their mid to late twenties, which is well past the age in which they are commonly tested so we don't have a very accurate read on where men actually end up. the last time they're typically measured is in HS when they are mentally maturing slowly so there's not a big difference between 16 and 18. personally I kept gaining up to around 40 and in some ways still am...
