What irks me is, the same people complaining about Americans will come here and show no respect for us, or our culture. Taking up entire sidewalks or bad mouthing your hometown to tell you how much it sucks compared to *insert European city*.

as a Texan living in the UK, I can say with 100% confidence that people in the UK feel INCREDIBLY inferior to Americans. and that makes them angry. I've seen them sit around and make stuff up about Americans that isn't even remotely true, just to have a mocking session. about things they made up.
they used to be the number 1 global super power, and they've been fuming ever since they lost it. a lot of them are completely diluted in fascinating ways.
I could write a book.. lol

I wonder if part of the way 🇺🇸 approach other cultures is partly due to the fact there are so many different cultures here already that ‘new culture’ is commonplace, and therefore interesting but not reverential

we're just used to different cultures. we are not a homogeneous people.

I also categorically refuse the whole Europe is older than America thing because no, it’s not. There were people here in America long before Europe colonised this land.

honestly about the only reason we go to another country is simply because we are bored

we don't mean disrespect, but a big part of OUR culture (for the most part) is that you and yours are not better than me and mine. you do you, and I'll do me.

As an American living in Europe, they don’t even know which English speaker is American tbh. There was an overweight couple speaking English but they had maybe a danish accent and the European I was with was like “Americans 🙄” like bro that’s one of you 🤭

Aristocracy is literally icky to us. the idea of curtsying or bowing to someone sounds violating honestly.

Not feeling inferior ≠ feeling superior, but it unfortunately often gets interpreted that way

American tourists aren’t the ones carving their names into Roman ruins.

I think if an American tourist comes off as disrespectful, it’s out of a place of a genuine lack of knowledge of the local customs. On the other hand, if a European tourist is disrespectful, it’s more commonly out of a place of blatant disregard for local customs, which stems from a sense of superiority.

Thank you, sincerely, thank you. As Americans we really do appreciate other countries and we do our best to respect other customs.

I had a guy suggest Americans set up cameras like London has so we wouldn’t need guns…. I don’t think he had a good understanding of 1)how big America really is and 2) Americans in general.

I think that is very insightful. Other cultures aren't superior or inferior. They're just different.
