@clairewesson: If you liked last night’s TLOU episode, I am genuinely happy for you! I don’t want this to read as a criticism of the quality of the show (I do think it’s high quality), but instead want to point out the discrepancy between author intent and select audience expectations. #tlou #thelastofus #joelmiller #pedropascal #bellaramsey #hbomax

also by changing the structure, Joel is no longer haunting the narrative throughout. it now feels less about him, and more about Ellie and Dina's relationship

These writers also don’t trust their audience to pick up on emotional cues and beats to help tell the story, instead they spoon feed feelings through literal dialogue.

The TV show is telling the audience, not showing. In the game, Joel never said he loved Ellie, but we saw in his emotions that he did.

After the show came out I've heard so many takes on the show, good and bad, but this is exactly spot on! Neil's writing is honest, Craig's is marketable. If Neil wrote the whole show with his team would HBO air it?

this episode felt so disjointed and strange for me. just flashbacks strung together.

Love the game and love the show. There’s no way a scene like the porch reveal can be put off to the end of Season 3 or even Season 4. Gamers had the full story in one shot. Spreading that over 3+ years doesnt work

We should’ve received little bits of flashbacks in every episode. Not just one big lore dump for an hour

I will say this a 1000 times until people understand: a game and a show are two different pieces of media and they are digested differently, so you have to write differently. It's not the game, just accept it.

I was genuinely shocked they chose to include that scene in this episode, but I also never experienced any catharsis from it when I experienced it in the game. To me it just added another layer of tragedy to the ending.

So agree! On the one hand, I get they wanted the emotional payoff of Ellie’s story this season since this is her season. But on the other hand, it works so much better coming at the end of the story. Plus I hated that the Salt Lake City reveal happened in the porch scene. Ellie gets confirmation on the big source of their tension and she shrugs it off in 5 min to say she’ll try to forgive him? It works better in the game when she’s had 2 years to process this info.

You have to understand that they can’t just pluck Pedro Pascal 2 years from now or whenever to come and shoot some scenes for the show. Dude is too busy. This scene had to happen this season because this is the time they had with him! Holy hell stop with the iT aInT liKe tHE gAMe nonsense!

This episode shows that Craig Mazin alone does not understand the material of which he was given. Neil taking a big step back in writing/directing the episodes shows

this! the structure of tlou2 was used as a HUGE storytelling device, so to see the story presented so differently in the show and some scenes being in a different order is so crazy and they don't hold the same emotional weight

All of this was thrown out the window in the beginning of season 2 when they decided to reveal everything about Abby from the get go. Joel offing her dad was an important revelation. The show disregards the impact of these revelations.

How about we admit the second game was bad. Instead of now blaming Craig mazin. We don’t even know who wrote what for season 2.

I am no fan of part 2 or Druckman. I have not seen the show, I only have played the games. I think when adapting a story from one medium to another aspects that are going to be lost in translation. I dont know if telling the story in that way would work becuase ofnthe time limitations that tv has as opposed to a video game But again, I am no fan of part 2. I love Abby as a character and her sections wete the most compelling to play as. But using seraphites as a stand in for Arabs was racist. The story does what a good sequel should do which is build on what came before. However the liberal zionism that is present through so much of the story ruin the franchsie for me.

I loved the episode, but this is the first criticism I've heard of this episode that made sense to me. Do you have an example of a TV show that successfully pulled off contextual dishonesty over multiple seasons? Not doubting you, just curious

You absolutely nailed this! If I never played the game I would think this was peak tv… but because I and everyone have played the game it’s a tough watch knowing Neil agreed to change his phenomenal story for tv ratings. It is completely difficult to watch this Ellie knowing this Ellie isn’t our Ellie (and no I don’t blame Bella)

Media literacy is at an all time low. Most of the purposes of the flashbacks in game was to introduce a new skill or item in a non gameplay situation. Of course the tv show was going to be different. This is embarrassing.
