The Hurt Locker (2008) is a modern day Lawrence of Arabia about US empire and our descent into full conservative fascism post 9/11. It’s a masterpiece that I argue should be viewed allegorically representing the mindset that full took hold of America in this century. I have no idea if any of this is intended, to be honest. I don’t know if Bigelow works on that level. She strikes me as someone who prioritizes accurate thematic depiction over all else, so I think she’s portraying this story accurately to the impulse that she sees, and she’s a tremendously talented artist, so she nailed the mindset as well as just about anyone ever has. I also think it’s a perfect subject for her, as her whole career has been largely an examination of danger and violence from different aspects. I lean towards the idea that she was implicitly putting a lot this stuff forward given her earlier work in Blue Steel (1990) and Strange Days (1995), as well as the recurring scenes with the different types of media that she uses. Notably, the movie literally begins with us viewing video through a bomb disposal unit. Is that her being Brechtian? Is she going overly melodramatic a la Sirk to make a larger point about what these characters represent? I personally think so, but I’m not sure. Maybe she’s sort of playing a joke on the audience, putting us into the same mindset as the people and making us question are appetite and lurid fascination—and tacit acceptance as citizens—of this danger. I really don’t know, which is why she’s is so endlessly fascinating as a filmmaker to me. She’s both incredible on a pure tactile level, but she also understands and has expressed melodrama on an extremely sophisticated level (see The Loveless, her first movie), and she also is recurringly exploring how we as audiences engage with this stuff in various forms of media going all the way back to her short film The Set-Up. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about this one for like fifteen years, so I wanted to make a video on it. #movietok #filmtok #leftisttiktok #socialism #leftist
