He really did not accept the premise, but tried to establish Obama as decent guy. Poor timing, I agree, but if you accept that he wasn’t great with rethoric you can’t just flat out state that he intentionally positioned himself against Arabs. Dangerous to draw the line like that.

I think Hasan is (very rarely) just wrong here. McCain is trying to appeal to her beliefs to see that Obama is a person. That’s why he uses terms like family man. He’s speaking down to her, not about Obama

Oooh, now I get it! She says Arabs are bad, and McCain kind of agrees with her, he doesn’t defend Arabs, he just says Obama isn’t one because he’s decent. I always thought this clip showed him being a good guy, but now I see he still reinforces the idea that being Arab is bad.

As someone who lived through this time, this is nothing more than McCain shutting down this line of questioning. McCain wasn’t one to push the Obama “birther” myth. That was Fox News and the far right. McCain wasn’t perfect, but he often chose decency over dishonest hyperbole.
