I tried learning Mandarin my junior year of highschool for the sole reason that lived a block away from a Chinese restaurant and I wanted to order my food in Mandarin... and see if they were talking shit while making my food lol

Felt bizarre to be the person in my Japanese class saying that I wanted to learn it because I was a linguistics nerd who liked languages very different than English and decided on Japanese specifically because I thought it sounded beautiful

I took a Japanese 101 class when I attempted my masters because I felt like my first go around wasn’t good enough. There was a young man in anime t shirts that greeted people with “konnichiwa, my boy!” And once tired to mansplain hiragana pronunciations by saying he learned through anime opening songs (I had taken Japanese in high school and undergrad and studied at home extensively). It was… an experience.
