I was playing the game Let’s Get Deeper, when I was asked the following question. Deeper What’s one thing you think everyone should experience at least once? Why? My response. While there are countless meaningful experiences, love, happiness, friendship, the first thing that came to my mind was heartbreak. As difficult and painful as it is, I truly believe everyone should experience heartbreak at least once. Because as much as love teaches us how to give, heartbreak teaches us how to grow. It reveals lessons that joy and comfort never could. Heartbreak, if we’re open to it, teaches us a lot about ourselves and the people we let into our lives. We learn how to set boundaries and that not everyone is meant to stay. We begin to see the difference between who we want someone to be and who they actually are. And perhaps most importantly, we learn how to be whole on our own, how to find happiness within ourselves instead of relying on someone else to provide it. Heartbreak strips us bare, it removes the illusions we build in love and forces us to see both others and ourselves more clearly. It challenges our identity and pushes us to rebuild with greater self-awareness. You discover strength you didn’t know you had, and you gain a deeper empathy for others who are hurting. Most of all, heartbreak reminds us of our capacity to feel deeply. To love so fully that its loss hurts, that’s a sign of being alive, of being open and vulnerable. And while it may seem like the end, heartbreak is often the beginning of something much more powerful: self-worth, clarity, and a more authentic understanding of love. So no, heartbreak is never easy. But if you let it, it becomes a turning point, one that softens, strengthens, and teaches. You’re not the same afterward, and that’s the gift. The pain didn’t break you, it built you.
