Sugar has come such a long way. 🍭 When Sugar first arrived and I put fly spray on her for the first time, she completely shut down and disassociated while I sprayed her. Her eyes went distant and she was abnormally still. Then when I was done she would stay still for a while, eventually wake back up and wander off. Even completely loose (at liberty) she let me do it, but it was clear she wasn’t a willing participant in the experience. Somewhere in her history she had learned that she just had to cope with this scary thing the best way she could until it was over. She had no voice. After some time with me, she started to realize she really did have a choice in these experiences. She had a voice, and I would listen. She started communicating very clearly she did NOT like the fly spray. Wide eyes, tension in the body, head lifted, and leaving right away. It would be easy to think “Man, I messed this up! She used to be SO GOOD, what happened?” But instead I was thrilled! She was communicating and becoming an active participant in our interactions. She had started to trust that she wouldn’t be corrected or ignored when she communicated. Now it was time for the fun stuff! 🤩 We started a cooperative care approach to fly spray. Reintroducing it in a low stress way, rebuilding her associations with it, and giving her a clear way to communicate when she was ready and when she wanted it to stop. The worry at this stage might be that she probably would never say yes to the fly spray again. Why would she? I understand this concern, but actually the complete opposite is the result! She became more willing to get fly sprayed and It’s now an easy process that she is fully engaged in. It’s amazing how such a simple, easily overlooked, and common interaction we have with our horses can speak volumes. How much power is in paying attention to these moments. These “every day” things we rush through speak volumes to our horses about whether or not we care about their feelings. Whether we see them and understand them. I really do believe that true horsemanship, true partnership, and true connection start with moments like this. ❤️
