Back in high school, I never learned about any presidents before Washington. Our history class zipped from the Revolutionary War to the Declaration of Independence, then the Constitution, and—boom—George Washington. I knew about the Articles of Confederation and Continental Congress, but I assumed no one held an executive role until Washington took office in 1789. In reality, from 1774 to 1789, Congress elected its own presidents under two systems: - 1774–1781 (“President of the Continental Congress”): Peyton Randolph, Henry Middleton, John Hancock, Henry Laurens, John Jay, Samuel Huntington - 1781–1789 (“President of the United States in Congress Assembled” under the Articles): Samuel Huntington (transitioning), Thomas McKean, John Hanson (first to serve a full term), Elias Boudinot, Thomas Mifflin, Richard Henry Lee, Nathaniel Gorham, Arthur St. Clair, Cyrus Griffin These men weren’t mere figureheads. When John Hanson took office in 1781, George Washington congratulated him on filling “the most important seat in the United States.” And in 1804, former President Thomas McKean declined Jefferson’s vice-presidential offer, arguing his earlier title “equaled any pretensions” to higher office. So yes, the office of “president” existed long before 1789—engaged in guiding the new nation through its earliest trials, even if their powers looked very different from those of Washington’s presidency. #thesehauntedhills #presidents #14presidents #hauntedhistory #14presidentlist #america #14presidentsbeforewashington #history #historytok
