I put my son’s OMNY in a plastic ID carrier and it’s lasted since September without getting ripped or messed up.

Metro cards are plastic, regular omny cards are plastic, the MTA seriously isn't losing that much money of a couple cents of plastic.

it's probably made of paper because of pricing, it costs a few cents more to make the plastic, but with the magnet thing between the paper, that makes it more expensive

I had to freaking pay 132$ to cover for the rest of the year because my school is so so rude and they never give the omny card and I just would rather pay then go through that process.

People in the comments who think it’s easy to replace them are mistaken😑 Some schools are reluctant to order replacements or can be rude about it. Even when they do, the replacements sometimes don’t work at all.😭
