Glad you got out of that abusive relationship and life. Ex IFBC Pastors wife here - all 100% accurate of the masks worn. So much coersion, control, evil and twisted scripture. Divorced after 22 yrs, got my Masters Degree,working toward my doctorate and flourishing in my own business as a counselor helping people heal from trauma including religious. Still serving God but under HIS love not man’s wrath and rules.

I grew up as a independent Baptist PK. Went to independent Baptist Bible College for one year. You are not on an island by yourself there is a hidden community of hurt. Keep turning on the light!!!

I’m so sorry my experience with a small independent Baptist Church like everybody was related and if you were part of that, you were still an outsider, but they did expect you to put your check every Sunday in the offering plate and show up to church every time the doors were open

Shouldn't there be a required relationship course for men to take on how to treat your spouse? it should include books like Men are from mars, women are from Venus, and mix in the fruit of the spirit, love, patience, kindness, gentleness and love your wife as Christ loved the church.

Powerful story. I’ve recently met several people that are fed up with the unrealistic expectations or requirements. I abandoned religion about 10 years ago but recently felt the tug to get close to God again. Most of us are in EMS and not everyone can relate to the things we experience ie murdred and abused kids etc. Most “church people” just say “ pray about it” or “ you just need to read your bible”. We want to talk about God and discuss, and the best way is to meet under the stars, by a fire pit, express our feelings and perspective and help each other to find answers in scripture without the judgement of those that have never walked on our shoes. And unless you’ve zipped up an entire family in body bags, you’ll not understand our perspective either. Some of the rudest and most judgmental people have been “church members”. Thanks for sharing

I grew up in the FBC as well and knew it was wrong the whole time! The rules were unbearable and the years dragged by. Several decades later I’ve learned to walk with Jesus without the religious guilt.

When I told my IFB pastor and his wife what was going on in my abusive marriage and they both looked like the were going to throw up -they paused a little and asked me if I had anywhere else to stay, they didn’t tell me to get a divorce but they highly suggested it. I FREAKED because they were the last ones I expected to support me. I left there and immediately went to the attorney and drew up divorce papers. I won’t disclose their names but I think they are no longer in IFB last I heard.

Omg Girl, I’m from WV too, the religious abuse in the Bible Belt is nothing short of a cult!!! Every part of your story resonates with me. I had ppd and was told it was bc I wasn’t close enough to God and had backslid and I also waited until marriage bc of the purity culture and was emotionally abused in my marriage but was told divorce was a sin. So much of your story is my story. 😭
