@color.nerd: Replying to @jeff_kawaii_ More discussion on the fascinating question of how birds (and other UV-sensitive tetrachromats) see color. Of course I'm generalizing here. But theoretically, adding a fourth type of cone cell doesn't just mean adding a fourth "primary color" to the color circle. It means you need a new geometry that allows connections between each pair of primaries - a tetrahedron. To learn more, look up the study by Stoddard et al, "Wild hummingbirds discriminate nonspectral colors" (2015). They were the first to propose modeling bird hues on a tetrahedral space, as far as I know. #colortheory #artandscience #stem #artteacher

My PhD was in avian vision and color perception, and this is a fantastic representation of the tetrahedron we use in mathematical models!

you need to go in 3 dimensions to represent 4 color receptors? There are color blind ppl, do you represent their colors on a line or a dot? 😳

I wonder if perhaps UV does not look like a unique color to them, and if perhaps their spectrum is just a shifted/stretched rainbow spectrum like ours. The 4th cone may just allow them to distinguish more hues among this normal spectrum better. This would avoid needing a 4th dimension for their color space. Yours is very cool though

I’m afraid people might mix up hue and colour and get the impression there’s something “special” about the jump from 3 to 4 cones instead of it being a result of our choice regarding the presented data (presenting hue for trichromatic vision because that can be communicated in 2D)

Oh you made a tetrahedron with rounded edges. Four corners, one edge for each pair of corners. Each edge shows the gradient between two primaries.

It seems like actually understanding the experience of such colour perception is probably impossible, but at least we can describe it with maths!

I can see another band below violet when looking at rainbow, it's kind of hard to describe a bit like a fluorescent white a bit like looking at a black light

could it be, like mantis shrimp, that their rods & cones aren't very good at distinguishing colour so they need more to see the same hues that we see?

I recently read that migratory birds have magnetoreception (the ability to see the earth’s electromagnetic field). Makes me so wish I could see like a bird for a day. Birds are wild! Thanks for the cool color knowledge drops!
