A father-son snowmobiling adventure took a terrifying turn when one of the men triggered an avalanche as he landed a jump on his vehicle. Dodge Poelman told Storyful that he and his father, Ryan Poelman, had been taking turns riding down the steep peak of Ant Knolls in Utah on Saturday, February 22. As they were getting ready to wrap up, Ryan decided to go up one last time while Dodge waited at the bottom filming. “Yes… the famous last words, ‘one more,’” Dodge said. As Ryan landed his final jump, the impact triggered the avalanche, according to Dodge, who captured the moment on video. Dodge said the avalanche turned his snowmobile sideways and completely buried him, but he managed to free himself. He quickly spotted his father about 30 yards away, pinned to a tree and almost entirely covered in snow, with only his head visible. Dodge ran over to help Ryan, clearing the snow from his chest. He said he was grateful his father hadn’t been impaled by the tree. About 20 minutes later, another group of snowmobilers arrived, called 911, and arranged for additional help. A Life Flight air ambulance responded, but due to the difficulties of the steep terrain, it took about two and a half hours for Ryan to finally be airlifted to a hospital. There he underwent surgery for internal bleeding caused by the fall. He had also fractured both sides of his pelvis. Despite his injuries, Dodge said his father is on track to make a full recovery in the coming months. “I believed in miracles before, and I believe in them even more today,” Dodge said after the harrowing incident.
