Come with me on an amazing summer weekend getaway to one of the most beautiful islands on the East Coast, hidden away in the smallest state in the US! Welcome to my new summer series: Leave. The City. This summer 10 getaways. 10 weekends from DC and NYC, packed with hidden gems. Episode 2: Block Island, RI ⛴️ Getting There: The easiest and most affordable way to reach Block Island is by ferry. You can catch a ferry from Orient Point, NY; Montauk, NY; New London, CT; Point Judith, RI; or Newport, RI. The closest to DC and NYC by car is New London, CT. 🏍️ Exploring the Island: The best way to explore the island is by moped or bike. The island is quite hilly, so if you don’t want to sweat and you’re a good driver, consider renting a moped (book in advance online). 🏡 Accommodation: The accommodations on Block Island are pricey during the season, with hotels starting at $400+ per night, and some rooms even have shared bathrooms. However, a day visit is more than enough to experience the island's charm, so you don’t even need to book a stay. ⚠️ Leave No Trace: Always follow Leave No Trace principles when exploring the outdoors. Stay on marked paths, do not trespass, pack out trash, and respect wildlife! Here’s a weekend itinerary to steal: * Tour the historic Southeast Lighthouse, built in 1875. * Lunch at The Oar. * Visit the 200-foot-tall Mohegan Bluffs, with 141 steps leading down to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. (Note: The staircase has recently reopened after repairs, so it’s safe to visit again!) * Hike at Rodman’s Hollow Preserve to Black Rock Beach. * For sunset, head to North Lighthouse, where you might spot the seals. Beyond the lighthouse lies the Sachem Pond Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for seals, gulls, swallows, and other wildlife. While the summer months are undoubtedly busy and expensive, you can always plan a visit for September or early October to avoid the crowds and find better prices. Block Island has stolen my heart, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to experience its magic for yourself! #blockisland #summergetaway #eastcoastsummer
