Very interesting to hear her talk about her experience as being black in America. Never thought of it that way.

Proof that America is obsessed with race and labels and putting you in a box

I'm originally from the US, been living in Japan since 1997, I'm a foreigner but I'm not 'foreign.' This lady, she's not a foreigner; she's from Japan. She shouldn't care how others see her. She should take charge of her identity.

so she as a black person has her own preconceived assumptions on what "Black" is....😒😒. I was raised in Germany and NEVER felt not black once my family relocated here.

For starters anyone (Black or non-Black) that thinks “acting” Black is a thing, you’ve got a shit ton of learning (and unlearning) to do …. And then the snapping & clapping? I’m embarrassed for her

I was born & raised in America & IVE had that experience of not being black enough so I can totally understand where she’s coming from seeing as how she wasn’t born here. Like, let’s not be so dense. Y’all know what she means. I’m convinced some ppl just wanna go back & forth to prove points that don’t needa be proved 🤷🏾‍♀️

I African American and I get her. I get called “white washed” by everyone but am really from the hood with education. Also, I lived in Japan for 1 year and the locals wanted me to do stereotypical things like rapping/gestures etc.

I hear her and I understand what she means but there are so many black people who don’t fit the societal image of what being black is who find communities that appreciate and respect them. i would assume being totally from Japan made her feel foreign in the US

Interesting. I didn’t like this take at first, but I guess it makes a lot of sense as I think about it. Cool.

Does she... maybe... perhaps think that living in Japan made her have a viewpoint of blk ppl that the Japanese have, and that forced her monolithic view of what "being blk" means.... cuz WHAT?!??!?

This weird story is way too long. When she said this online a decade ago she got challenged. You can be any kind of Black and still be Black. She is the common denominator in those interactions. Signed- Valley Anime Black girl from Cali who lived in Japan a few years ago

As someone who grew up Black in America I’m very surprised she felt she didn’t fit in or had to change herself in any way. If she told me she grew up in America I would accept that unquestioningly. I detect not even a hint of accent in her English, and her mannerisms don’t seem any different than the Black ppl I’m familiar with. Idk. If you come back to the states try NYC next time. Perhaps you were in the wrong city/state. And please don’t do any of the snapping/clapping. 😂

In America you can be multigenerational American but if you’re not white they make you feel like a foreigner.

I understand what she’s saying. Growing up around white people most my life I was different and didn’t really act black was a lil hard. But I learned to accept it and teach. ❤️

She is accepted as Black the same way any Black person from overseas is accepted. She is just not Black American (AA) by culture. I would never expect to be fully accepted culturally as Nigerian, Jamaican, Haitian, etc. if I didn't grow up in that culture just bc I'm Black.
