The Mojave Short-Takeoff and Landing (STOL) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) is an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). Unveiled on December 9, 2021, Mojave is designed to perform a range of missions, including reconnaissance, close air support, and armed overwatch, particularly in austere environments with limited infrastructure. Drawing from the proven designs of the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1C Gray Eagle, Mojave features several enhancements tailored for expeditionary operations. Notably, it is equipped with ruggedized landing gear and enlarged wings fitted with high-lift devices, enabling short-field takeoffs and landings on unimproved surfaces. This capability was demonstrated on August 1, 2023, when Mojave successfully conducted multiple takeoffs and landings on a dirt strip near El Mirage, California, achieving takeoffs in as little as 586 feet and landings in as short as 335 feet. Mojave's propulsion is provided by a combat-proven 450-horsepower turbine engine, granting it significant endurance and payload capacity. The aircraft can carry up to 3,600 pounds of payload, including an arsenal of up to 16 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles or other munitions, as well as various sensors and logistical resupply pods. Its modular design adheres to a Modular Open System Approach (MOSA), incorporating modernized avionics, data links, and sensor integration, which enhance its versatility across multiple mission profiles. One of Mojave's standout features is its operational flexibility. Its STOL capabilities allow it to operate from semi-improved surfaces, reducing dependence on traditional runways and enabling rapid deployment in diverse environments. The aircraft is designed for quick assembly and can be transported in a C-130 Hercules aircraft, making it ideal for forward-basing operations without extensive infrastructure. Additionally, Mojave is equipped with a multi-sensor suite, including Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems, Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator (SAR/GMTI), Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), supporting a wide range of missions in joint all-domain operations.
