in the Netherlands if something is 99 cents you either have to pay by card or else stores have to either take the 1 cent which nearly one do or round it to the nearest 5 cents

companies make prices go to 99 cents that way they absolutely maximize profit, while the consumer still considers the price to be the same. Everyone uses a credit card or some other digital payment anyway, it doesn’t matter

I think with the rounding you just wouldn’t get any change, one cent is lower than half of 5 cents so you wouldn’t get anything the price would stay the same
