Space is the immense, boundless expanse that exists beyond Earth’s atmosphere, starting roughly at the Kármán line, about 100 kilometers above sea level. It is a near-perfect vacuum, meaning it lacks air and has extremely low pressure and density. Because of this, sound cannot travel through space, and temperatures can vary drastically. Space contains all celestial bodies, including stars, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, galaxies, and black holes. It is also filled with invisible forms of radiation and dark matter. Gravity still acts across space, shaping the motion of objects. The universe, which includes all of space, is constantly expanding. Studying space helps us understand the origins, structure, and future of the cosmos.
