Whakapapa is enough to be Māori but whakapapa does not keep our culture alive, it has to be practiced or we go from a culture to just an ethnicity

There is Māori ethnicity and Māori culture. Māori ethnicity is whakapapa. Māori culture is about language, traditions, daily practices, philosophical belief system.

Yes it also means our Māori people don’t turn their own people away when they want to learn. Because my babies were turned away because they didn’t go to kohanga. It was disappointing to know that despite being Māori and wanting to learn their culture then being told no because you are not Maori enough

To me Whakapapa is enough because thats something u can never change. Yes we need to keep working towards getting our Te Reo Maori and Te Ao Maori to normality for our people. But this must come naturally without judgement. We need to uplift each other on our journey. And remember to walk side by side (no one in front and no one left behind)

I grew up in a home where we didn’t speak much reo but my mum took me out of kindy and enrolled me into kohanga and from there I thrived!!! I would speak reo Māori to my mum (she didn’t really understand what I was saying but she learnt) I would sing waiata and because I sung them so much everyone else in my house also picked up on them, our whare has been a bilingual whare since then and I thank my mum for that!

We are fighting against the current. If we sit still and stop working we will be carried down stream, and loose our current position or any gains. Kia Kaha, Kia Manawanui!!

I agree, just looking Māori isn't enough in this day and age. I was seeing a guy who wore a full face mataora and when it came time to submit against the Treaty Principles Bill, he had to ask me if we were for or against it, because he didn't even know 😳 umm, excuse me, what??....we didn't last much longer than that lol

Te ao maori is just a minuet part of what is needed in terms of identity, upholding maori in general. the world we live in outside of that is where we need to focus on because that's where dysfunctional, hardship and struggles exist and plagues our/all people. te ao maori isn't enough...

whakapapa is not enough. You need to live your culture and be connected to your whānau hapū iwi. Otherwise you just have whakapapa.

my mum was part of the urban migration - I migrated back to the wops and raised my kids in kohanga and kura kaupapa - they are now reading and writing te reo and correcting me on my haka actions and kupu 🥰 beat decision I made was te ao Māori education for ōku tamaiti
