@barnardco: What are Gestalt principles? Have you ever heard the expression, “The sum of the whole is greater than its parts”? This basically refers to the fact that we tend to see the whole picture before we see the details. For example, if you look at someone’s face, you don’t recognise them by the look of their nose alone. You recognise them by the sum of their features. Well, Gestalt principles express this in five basic ways: 1. Similarity
Our brains will group objects together with similar shape, colour or size.
2. Proximity
Objects close to one another are often perceived as a group.
3. Continuity
Our brain will look for simplicity, and will follow an implied path, even if it’s disconnected.
4. Closure
Our brain likes to fill in the blanks and complete unfinished forms or shapes.
5. Figure/Ground
The relationship between a form and its surrounding space. Sometimes achieved with negative space designs.
(Depending on who you speak to, there are a few more like symmetry, simplicity and common fate.) As a designer, you don’t need to be able to list these from memory, because just by being alive on this planet, you already know them all. They are just terms to help us make sense of what we perceive as we grow up. So don’t be intimidated when someone tells you to “USE GESTALT PRINCIPLES”. It just means that the details of your design are important, but make sure your design works as a whole. 👍 #graphicdesign #designtok
