The dads on Dungeons and Daddies do Dad Facts! Which is a fun fact about their character at the start of each session. It gives a little insight into their character but also is a warm up for getting into character.

we do campfire talks on our off weeks! everyone makes up a weird story of the town they come from and 2 questions they get to ask the others! it's really funny

i found a list of 100 player character questions online. at the beginning of each session i let my players roll a d100 and answer a random personal question in character

Yes! I’ve been doing this with my Pathfinder group since we’ve started it’s so fun and it makes it so easy to sneak in questions that help with upcoming plot points

I gave them 3 days of ingame downtime to learn some new skills or try to make some money in their starting town. Each of the characters developed organically and it helped me learn a bit about them as the DM

im dm'ing for the first time soon and my friends have never played before, before we start with any larger storylines im planning some loose games that almost act like little tutorials for them to understand diff mechanics

I started playing at a local game store and me and this one dude were not getting along AT ALL so after a couple sessions my friend made the whole group play some ice breakers in character to get to know each other and after that the dude became like my best bud in the party despite the roughly 3 decades of age difference between us
