The one time luxury purchases isn't what makes you broke. It's the monthly payments.

I heard this argument recently. Dude was calling things like TV’s and music players luxories. Nah not anymore man. Luxories are trips, boats, nice cars, and they’re more expensive than ever. Electronics aren’t really luxories by today’s standards.

It’s pretty simple… look what all 3 of those things have in common …. Government take over. Yet people want more government

Rich people figured out they can price gouge things we can't live without better than the things we can. They then lower the price on luxury so we won't notice we are bent over and lubed.

Republicans when determing the measures of poverty want to consider ownership of a refrigerator a "luxury".

Yeah but those luxuries lasted you 50 years. Now we have to keep re buying stuff because it’s all designed to break after a couple of years. My parents still have the same furniture but I have to get a new couch every 5 years.

The old luxuries lasted till you got tired of them. Today they fail within 3 years giving you the illusion its cheaper.

What many people in the newer generation don't realize is how much more they have today compared to previous generations. You get to have smartphones, Xboxes, streaming services like Netflix, and more—things that were unimaginable not too long ago. And yet, some still complain about not having enough.
If you stopped spending money on constant luxury and unnecessary items, you could likely afford essentials like rent without as much struggle.
As a society, we’ve prioritized convenience and consumerism over necessities, and that's exactly how the market has evolved—because we, the consumers, drive it.
Then, when the government steps in to regulate things—say, with tariffs—people panic because they might not be able to afford the next Nintendo Switch.
But the truth is, most of us already have more than enough 'stuff.' What’s missing isn’t more products—it’s perspectiv.

I get the point you're making, but dude. Cell phones and CD players didn't even exist in 1980.

As a Gen-Xer that lived through this, he’s not wrong. Luxuries and necessities got flipped. And that’s why it is so hard today. I’ve got adult kids still at home because housing has gotten so unaffordable. What was a luxury in the 80s is now affordable and necessities are now unaffordable. And no, it has nothing to do with who’s in office. This happened with both parties in power.

I’m not going to try and disagree with you, but we really need to stop perpetuating the myth that you need 20% down to buy a house.

Ya but people still live beyond their means. You don’t need a 500-800 car payment or a LV bag or wallet you don’t need to be going out every weekend. People do this because they want to act rich or show off or because they want to live a more luxurious life but the fact it they can’t afford it and instead of coming to terms with it and being smart, they still spend money frivolous and blame everyone else for their problems and cry that everything is too expensive. It is but people choose to spend their money wrong. If you make less than 80k a year, you shouldn’t have a $400+ car payment.

People act like we get a car because we want to be fancy. No we get a car because we now got to drive an hour to a job we hate due to everyone working multiple jobs.
