The double leash method is a training technique that involves attaching one end of a leash to the dog’s collar (usually a flat or martingale collar) and the other end to the front clip of a harness. This allows the handler to guide the dog from two points of contact, offering more control and better communication during walks or training sessions especially during the early stages of teaching loose leash walking and a proper heel position. For clients working with large, strong, or overly enthusiastic dogs, early training stages can feel overwhelming. Many of these dogs haven’t yet learned how to walk politely on leash and may: • Pull forcefully • Lunge unpredictably • Ignore verbal cues in high stimulus environments The double leash setup offers a balanced approach….the collar provides directional feedback while the front-clip harness helps redirect pulling and distribute pressure more safely across the chest. This reduces strain on the dog’s neck, prevents injury, and gives the handler added control without relying on aversive tools or excessive force.
