"Dororo" is an anime in the genres of dark fantasy, adventure, and historical drama. It is based on the manga by the legendary Osamu Tezuka. There are two adaptations: the old one from 1969 and a newer, darker, and more stylish version from 2019. Here's a summary of the latter, as it’s the more popular and deeper version. The story unfolds in feudal Japan. A greedy daimyo named Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 12 demons: he offers them the body of his unborn son in exchange for the prosperity of his land. When the child is born, he has no skin, no eyes, no limbs, and no sensory organs — just a living lump of flesh. The father orders the infant to be disposed of. However, the child is saved by a kind-hearted doctor who crafts prosthetics and artificial organs for him out of compassion. The boy is named Hyakkimaru. As he grows up, he sets out on a journey across the country to defeat the demons and reclaim the stolen parts of his body. On the road, he meets a homeless thief named Dororo — a bold and street-smart child with a dark past, who becomes his companion.
