The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was one of the most powerful states in medieval Europe, stretching at its peak in the 15th century from the Baltic Sea almost to the Black Sea. Founded in the 13th century, it emerged in a region threatened by external powers such as the Teutonic Knights, Mongols, and neighboring kingdoms. Despite these pressures, Lithuania grew into a vast and resilient state through military strength, strategic diplomacy, and alliances. What made Lithuania particularly unique in European history was its pagan identity. While most of Europe had converted to Christianity by the Middle Ages, the Lithuanians maintained their indigenous polytheistic religion for centuries longer than their neighbors. Their faith centered on natural forces, sacred groves, fire cults, and a pantheon of deities such as Perkūnas, the thunder god. This persistence in paganism was partly a matter of identity and partly a political strategy: adopting Christianity too early could have placed Lithuania under the influence of either the Catholic Church (via Poland and the Teutonic Order) or the Orthodox Church (via Rus’). Because of this, Lithuania became known as the last pagan state in Europe. The turning point came in 1387, when Grand Duke Jogaila accepted baptism into Catholicism as part of his marriage alliance with Queen Jadwiga of Poland, leading to the Christianization of Lithuania’s elites and eventual union with Poland. Samogitia, the western region of Lithuania, resisted longest, officially converting only in 1413, though elements of traditional beliefs lingered well beyond that. #lithuania #lietuva #edit
