He’s an obyrith too. A demon lord from a reality that they destroyed and they wanna do it again. His kind made the homegrown tanar'ri demons we know like Orcus and Demigorgon. He loves to corrupt good people and also technically rules the skies of every layer as well as layer 1 and a another layer where he stashes his secrets.

I had a player Purify the Demon Gargauth that was trapped in a Shield by Fusing it with the Jewel of three prayers to create a Ring that now possessed a Demon with Holy power. his name was still Gargauth but his title changed to Sacred Demon Lord

clever use of suggestion, modify memory and geas have him in a constant loop of teleporting to random mortals, heck give one of them a vacation to sigil and see how the lady of pain likes him showing up
