@camwhitnall: Britain’s zoos are about to change forever! 🐘🦁 DEFRA has introduced the world’s most rigorous licensing standards for zoos, aquariums, and safari parks in Britain. 🇬🇧 For too long, zoos have been misunderstood as places of entertainment, but these new standards make it unmistakably clear: modern, good zoos put wildlife first. They’re hubs for education, conservation and world-class animal care. 👏 Let’s us know your thoughts in the comments! 👇 ______________________ #zoos #zoostandards #animalwelfare #conservation #wildlife #animals
2040?? Not being funny, it shouldn’t take 15 years for elephants to have more appropriate enclosures

This is fantastic news, however my concern is if birds of prey aren’t tethered (I assume meaning no Jesse’s, anklets etc?), how can education be provided at a reasonable level?

Touch pools in aquariums are so unbelievably unnecessary 🥲

Anything that increases animal care and welfare, along with preserving species has to be a good thing.

If you're going to a zoo and you can easily see the majority of the animals, it's not a modern zoo.

I stopped visiting zoo’s because of the cruelty towards the animals. I’m really happy to hear this. Animals have thought and feelings. They hate being locked up just like human do

we need this for our domesticated animals too. If zoo animals were kept in the same way we keep horses there'd be a major outcry

If only as much time, money and effort went into maintaining the natural environment as went into zoos

What gets me is when people read the boards and go “That’s a lie, why are they lying they aren’t endangered”…. I see peoples views on them being locked away but with people thinking they are superior to everything, without some zoos, we’d have a lot more extinct species.

Commendable but I worry about our waters. Government will not take utility companies to task. We have a responsibility to life in and outside of a zoo.

this is brilliant news but my concern is that these places will become extortionate to visit and thus end up closing as people can't afford it

Everyone saying zoos are bad, the reason they’re not in the wild is because of the lack of funding for them to be able to survive safely in the wild. How often are you donating to conservation and wildlife reserves, zoos are a good way to get people interested in helping wildlife conservation.

It's time we phased out zoos. These animals should be in their natural environment, not locked away. If zoos were beneficial for conservation, we wouldn't be in the midst of a 6th mass extinction event.

Just been to Chester Zoo on Tuesday, and the animals had so much room in their enclosures it was crazy! Just about had enough time to see all the animals in six and a half hours out of the seven hours it was open. All the animals looked very happy there too 😁
