I almost passed on this one. Unmasked by Emily Mendenhall explores what happened in her hometown of Okoboji, Iowa, during the summer of 2020. As a small tourist town in the middle of the pandemic, it became a hotspot where public health, politics, and personal beliefs collided. Emily is an anthropologist, and her perspective is grounded in research and humanity rather than headlines. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I’d connect with this book. I lived through the pandemic with a more conservative lens, focused on small business and personal freedom. But Emily’s objective, thoughtful approach shifted the way I view certain decisions from that time. One idea that really stood out was how shame was used as a control mechanism. She was shamed for wearing a mask in some communities, and shamed for not wearing one in others. Her message isn’t about choosing a side. It’s about how we treat each other when fear takes over. This book sparked my interest in reading more about modern anthropology, and I was lucky enough to get some great recommendations from Emily when I interviewed her on the BookThinkers podcast.
