In Italian an ‘accident’ is called a ‘sinistro’ (literally ‘a left’). Also ‘sinistro’ means ‘sinister’ :)

Does the Romanian language come from Italian? or Latin? or do all three come from another older language?

Same with “fox” in French and “bear” in English. It was thought that saying the animal’s name would summon it so people used different words which led to the vocabulary we have today.

Now, why is left & right applied as they are on the political spectrum? As the Spanish say, left liberates, right constricts.

what about Lithuanian "kairė" for left and "dešinė" for right? neither of them have any positive or negative connotations, unless there's some archaic meaning I'm not aware of. feels like the "everyone" statement at the end may be a bit too broad?

Panagiotis Varlagas :
@Panagiotis Varlagas: Interestingly enough, the Greek word for “left”, ἀριστερὰ (aristerà), while being Homeric, comes from ἄριστος (áristos), which means “the best” (cf. aristocracy, i.e. “ruler of the best”), pointing to some really old (pre-Homeric!) euphemism.
