But Jesus took our sin to the cross, bearing it so we don’t have to pay for it. So if he took it, why would we still need to deal with the consequences in ‘purgatory’?

The Orthodox Church, the real church of Christ, doesn't accept purgatory but we believe that the prayers of pious people in the earth can change the will of God sometimes and send someone from hell to heaven

The bible also says that flesh is flesh and spirit is spirit. The flesh desires sin, but our spirit doesnt. When we die we are seperated from the flesh and therefore no longer desires to do things against Gods will.
