welcome to Montana! i live in Missoula and years ago we would go to that same mine before it was commercialized. we would pay $35 a day to dig directly out of the hillside. We would then take as many buckets of rocks to the stream and shake them out there. magical. I got a 6 carot orange sapphire one time.

My Nana and Papa lived in Sapphire Village in MT. We used to pick sapphires out of their driveway and drop them into pill bottles because all of their driveway gravel was taken from the tailings of the mine. One of my favorite memories ever!

Is this where you can find the cornflower blue sapphires? I believe Montana is known for this specific color. I’d love to see opal mining, diamond mining, emerald mining ect. I love reading up on that stuff around the US! We don’t have any of these in Michigan, but I loving hunting for Leland blues here 💙

There’s been a significant amount of debate in my household about whether sapphire mining/panning is a rigged game or not. My mom is convinced yes and my roommate no. I and my partner stay out of it entirely.
