This movie makes us realize that’s it’s both their faults. Tom insisted that he could’ve change her opinion on relationships and when she finally cut him off, he was torn apart. Summer on the other hand, even when she said she didn’t want a serious relationship, she went along with it. She acted like this, making Tom believe that she actually wanted something with him. Worse part is as soon as they stopped “being together”, she found someone who made her realize she wanted to get married. Both of them have made mistakes that in a way makes the viewers realize how people aren’t always meant to be “soulmates”.

For anyone who hates summer, watch the movie again. She was always honest with him about what she wanted. For anyone who loves summer, watch the movie again. She was stringing this poor guy along. That’s why this movies so brilliant. Every rewatch gets me switching sides.

can't believe people still discuss whether they were both wrong or not. they are, but not in the way people think. summer's actions were evil because they were highly inconsiderate and she understood how deeply he valued her, yet still chose to use and ultimately punish his affections for her own benefit; tom's actions were wrong because he knew the reality of the situation and ignored it for the belief that she might treat his offered vulnerability with love and respect. the difference? one is born of self-centeredness, and the other is born of hope. one hurts everyone around them whilst carrying on as though they never did, while the other hurts exclusively themselves by trusting the wrong person.
