Vein marking techniques can be used for both IV insertion and phlebotomy. . An easy trick for any patient with deeper or less visible veins (other than simply choosing a landmark on the skin like a freckle, mole, scar or tattoo) is to place a sterile alcohol pad just above where you feel the vein best. Use the corners of the pad as a directional marker so you can line up your needle properly. Cleanse the site while holding the pad in place, then perform your venipuncture. . . You can also use a surgical skin marker, just make sure not to pierce through the marking. Place a dot above and below where you feel the vein best. This will give you an idea of which direction the vein is running. Insert your needle in between these two dots 😊 (there are more marking techniques in the IV Video Course too). .
