My great grandma made shirts and pinnies and diapers for the little kids, aprons, and finally quilts out of anything she couldn't turn. She had 11 children. 6 girls, 5 boys. My grandma had dresses reworked from her 18yrs older sisters dresses in the 1930's.

People often ask us this too at events. The amount of time & effort that went into producing material in the Saxon age was incredible, so absolutely yes we are reusing until things literally fall apart! 🙌

at Sackets Harbor NY a well to do family that lived there after the war of 1812 has a wash journal in the museum where they would keep track of everytime an item was washed and after I believe it was 15 washes they would cut the clothing up for rags. Blew my mind!

I have a pin cushion that my mom made from a tattered shirt that had belonged to my dad. She also happened to have made that same shirt years earlier. She embroidered a little bird on the pin cushion and I cherish it so much.

the plastic made fabric we have nowadays doesn't allow this unfortunately. useless as rags or towels and will simply disintegrate around the thread if resewn. in my experience at least.
