We know just how intimidating the formula aisle can be! It can be hard to wade through all the scientific names and marketing jargon to figure out what’s actually in a formula. Here are some tips! 👇 First things first, the most important part of the label is the ingredients list. The nutrition facts don’t change much, brand-to-brand, as the FDA regulates nutrient level maximums and minimums. Instead, pay attention to the first few lines of the ingredients list, because that’s where the information that YOU want lives! 🕵️‍♀️ Here’s what to be aware of: 🔎 Routine/Standard Formulas: Milk and lactose will always be the top two ingredients here! You also may notice “whey protein concentrate” if the formula has enough added whey protein to mirror the whey:casein ratio in mature breastmilk. 🔎 Ready-to-feed (RTF): These are liquid formulas! Note that the ingredients in RTF formulas tend to vary from the same brand’s powder versions. You’ll often see “water” as an ingredient and that’s okay! Water is a primary ingredient in powder formula too— you just add it yourself 😉 🔎 Gentle/Sensitive: The first ingredient will sometimes be a carb source that’s NOT lactose/milk. These carb sources could be corn syrup solids, corn maltodextrin, glucose syrup, or sucrose. And remember— these ingredients are not BAD! They are included to give your baby proper nutrition and energy from carbohydrates when lactose is either reduced or completely removed. You should also look for words like “partially hydrolyzed” or “whey/casein protein hydrolysate” which all mean that the cow’s milk proteins are broken down and easier to digest. 🔎 Organic: If using an organic formula is important to you, you can check the ingredients list to see which of their ingredients are organic! At least 95% of ingredients must be organic for a product to receive the USDA organic seal and be considered an “organic product.” Any questions? Drop them in the comments! . . . #babyformula #formulafeeding #fedisbest #infantformula #formulafed #bottlefeeding #postpartum #4thtrimester #bottleboldly #brandnewbaby #firsttimeparents #formulafeeding #infantformula
