The characterization of the elves in Frieren is so well-thought out. They don’t curse the fact they have long lives. They don’t act childish or modernize themselves to the point where you wouldn’t guess they were old. They are wise as a result of their age but they are not presented as all-knowing. Both Serie and Frieren have adjusted their mindset to living long lives but have faults in their personalities as a result of their longevity. They also show clear influences of the people that have come close to them and passed.

She says her students are failures and she doesn't care about them but yet she continues to take on new students and she remembers EVERY single one of them as well as their favourite spells. She pretends that she disliked flamme to the point that she ripped up flammes will, but she still honoured flammes request to lead the new Imperial mages and the magic association. And her room is filled with flammes favourite flower. Maybe that's why she insists on saying she hates frieren, Frieren reminds her of flamme, or she sees Frieren as an extension of flamme, and she hasn't gotten over the grief of losing flamme. it's her way of hiding her grief

Just like Frieren collects spells and treasure, Serie collects humanity and potential. Unlike Frieren though, Serie never realizes why she does it. Shes a mother who would never admit she is one 😔

Also I imagine to elves it’s like losing a baby or young child . The way she said “flamme never got to reach my heights” reminds me of how us humans say “she had a whole life ahead of her” “gone too soon” “there was so much left undone” when someone young dies.

I will always say the elves in Frieden are inherently deeply caring even despite their typically aloof nature; though they usually realise far too late how deeply they cared or wholeheartedly deny it to displace the grief. Because it’s easier to deny they’ve lost something they can never get back again no matter how strong they are, or how long they’ve lived for

to me whenever Serie says "failure" it didnt feel like she was disappointed. "failure" felt more like a sad conclusion that these talented humans can't live long enough to reach peak greatness IF they had the same lifespan. "Flamme was great but did not live long enough to become greater" that's what it felt like whenever she called students failures.

i think she thinks of all her students as failures because their life spans just couldnt last long enough for them to reach her power, but they all had the same or higher potential than she does. just not enough time.

I believe the closest feeling we humans can have regarding elves resembles what we experience with our pets. Typically, they’re destined to live shorter lives than us, and though we love them wholeheartedly, we understand they’ll depart first. We don’t curse our time on earth because they’re gone; we simply accept it and strive to cherish every moment we share with them. I think Serie feels the same. It’s not that she sees us as pets, but rather that she understands our existence is fleeting compared to hers. That’s why she considered us a failure: no matter how many apprentices she takes on even if they become excellent mages their lives will never be more than a blink to her
