@_historyunveiled: In 1619, a ship arrived on the shores of the English colony of Virginia, carrying around twenty Africans. They were not passengers or free workers — they were brought as forced labor, exchanged for food and supplies. 🛳️ At the time, their legal status was not clearly defined, but their arrival marked the beginning of institutionalized slavery in Britain’s North American colonies. ⚖️ Throughout the 1600s and 1700s, as plantations expanded, the demand for labor grew. Colonies began to pass laws that tied a person’s status to their skin color. Slavery gradually became hereditary and permanent, meaning children born into slavery automatically remained enslaved. 👶🏽➡️⛓️ Africans who were enslaved were not only laborers — they physically and culturally helped build much of America. Yet their rights were systematically denied, and families were separated without protection. 💔 Slavery was officially abolished in 1865 through the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, following the end of the American Civil War (1861–1865). ⚔️📜 However, the question of equality did not end with emancipation. Freed people continued to face racism, segregation, and systemic discrimination throughout the 20th century — and into the present. 🤐 The story of slavery in America is not only one of oppression, but of resilience, faith, and the fight for freedom. Many escaped, resisted, passed down stories, and created a living culture that endures to this day. ✊🏿🔥 #americanhistory #blackhistory #truehistory #visualstorytelling #slaverytofreedom #historymatters
