Those terms are from the past. There used to be a tank for the boss and a tank that handled any extra mechanics or swaps. It's pretty even on responsibilities now

its an old concept in wow that's dead. bosses used to have more tank mechanics instead of just swapping tank busters for example. one tank might tank the boss alone while the other tanked adds only. thus main tank and off tank. it also helped healing assignments.

TBC Gruuls Lair first fight needed main tank, off tank, druid tank and mage tank for a single fight. not to mention Council fight in Black Temple or Leo in SSC with a warlock-offtank. Definitely required more neurons back in the day xD good times :)

There really isn’t one in undermine. Tank1 starts then the other has to taunt at a specific point.

Maintank should prio threat . offtank prios defensive stats as they tank the one that isn't dpsd first

For my team main tank is the one taking initial aggro and the one that defaults taking aggro during a phase shift. But it is pretty much an old term for when bosses didn’t have instant kill mechanics for tanks that force them to swap aggroes. i get sligh flashback for dis. i got treats for not doing my job. when my pc deicded to leg so badly it was a mirical we even manged the two last bosses. for i got just a few frems working before it Froze up again

back then on a big raid there were tanks and off tank, main tank agro main boss and off tank agro the adds. or if there is dot on a main tank that can only be dispel by removing agro then the off tank will take agro this the dots gone. really it must been a long long time since I played WOW 😅

It is boss specific, when you can make 1 tank take every tankbuster, the other one is just a melee dps and taunt+ tank until next tankbuster where the main will taunt back to take it

I mean the term arnt really used that any more. you have the lead tank/main who's gonna rip aggro during opening. which means they have to start the fight as they'll take first mechanic.

Pretty much yea. The most experienced is generally the main tank. He is in charge of setting the pace and positioning the boss. The OT is for adds/mechanic help

it was also a good intimation to tanking, main tank would explain what he is doing and what he needs the off tank to handle. and eventually you would swap roles once you have enough experience

yea, this really only applied to certain fights where you want 1 tank to get the boss since they have a better mit profile between the two tanks. IE bunk junker, blood Dk main tank, paladin off tank only doing ball.

I refuse to use MT/OT. It’s only Good Tank and Bad Tank 😌.

Honestly at this point its just 2 tanks to swope on Mechs. I the past one had the boss on them mainly and the OT would've there to take boss while a debuff fell off or pick up Trash/mobs as the spawned in boss fights.

In the past main tank was the dominate tank. They had more skill, could make callouts or adjustments. It was the same as “lead dps”. Now days people just call main tank the person starting the fight and 90% of tanks are clueless on improving other than slight adjustments. Tanking has had a STEEP decline since Shadowlands

Yeh it's an older term. Usually it boiled down to gear and spec. One was usually geared and species for bossing, the other was to pick up adds or temporarily swap out with the Main to let the Mains stack or devuff drop so they could take back over etc.
