As someone who’s worked at nursing homes throughout college- 98% of residents were those with a husband and children, yes as in plural 😩. The majority were never visited and if they were it was for holidays for a solid hour. When we asked the family about the residents life before the nursing home I kid you not most of the time they’d have nothing but wonderful things to say about their parent. I say all of this to say that I laugh when women and men make snarky comments like “oh you’ll end up at a nursing home alone.” towards women who chose to be child free when in reality, it’s them who will more than likely end up in a nursing home the second they need assistance with even the most minimal task. I witnessed it for 4 years. The child free residents were very rare and they’d typically stay at their own homes getting home care assistance.

I'm 37 and have to take care of my aging parents (now it's only my dad sadly) and I'm already thinking about going to a nursing or retirement home when the time will come. I would never ask my children to go through what I've gone through. It's brutal.

I’m 32 and don’t want kids and I am hoping by the time I’m old they will have like some AI robots who can help me with tasks at home. I don’t think that’s a crazy thing to think for in 50 years

Just because you have kids and do the very best for them, doesn’t mean they will be there for you at the end. My aunt got cancer died while her son didn’t even come visit her. We were there for her in the end she did everything she could as a single mom for him.

a community of elderly would be next to staying with family, company, Dr, nurse, on hand etc...perfect really....just not enough of those communities...just old cold nursing homes, where left in rooms, and disinterested staff, I hear.

It is so strange to me that people with kids have the expectation that they take care of them when they are older yet have the audacity to call people without kids selfish.
