I completely agree with the woman’s statement. Flooding can occur at any time and in any place if there is no proper planning in place, especially when drainage systems are poorly constructed or clogged with waste. One of the main causes of flooding is the use of small gutters that cannot handle large volumes of rainwater, particularly when they are filled with plastic waste and debris.
In Europe and the United States, while flooding can still occur, the impact is often less severe because of effective urban planning. Buildings are constructed based on zoning laws and safety regulations. People have the freedom to choose where to build their homes, but it must meet established standards. Most importantly, these countries invest in infrastructure that includes proper drainage systems and water channels that direct excess rainwater to natural outlets such as rivers, lakes, and seas.
Unfortunately, the situation in Ghana is different. There is a lack of consistent planning, and more concerning is the misuse of government funds. Instead of investing in large, efficient drainage channels to control floodwaters, funds are often misallocated or projects are done poorly. For example, in one town, a gutter was constructed, but it was far too narrow to handle any significant amount of water. If a heavy flood occurs, how can such a system possibly carry the water away fast enough to prevent damage?
Proper development and investment in infrastructure do not only help prevent disasters, they also boost the economy. Floods destroy property, disrupt transportation, damage businesses, and endanger lives. But if we take the right steps, we can reduce these risks significantly.
