He’s not wrong. My friend is an ATC. Out of 3000 applicants 3 were selected his year.

Nav Canada has such a difficult and long hiring process that needs to be fixed if there is a shortage. There’s lots of candidates, but out of say 50 candidates only 2 will pass the testing and interviews.

I did the initial exam, ~60 people attended. Only me and 3 others were called back for the 4 hour interview, 3 months later. I passed the interview for "Field Service Specialist" and did not pass for ATC. I waited 1 year and 6 months before being offered a standby spot for school, got the call 3 days ago.

I looked into being an air traffic controller once. Not enough pay for the stress and hours off your life that job comes with it.

My bf is training with Nav Can rn, they really do leave no stone unturned for supporting the candidates. However, it's such an incredibly difficult course that a lot of people don't make it, and tower controllers are getting older and wanting to retire with no one to really replace them
