Cooking, cleaning and chores in general are not “gender roles.” If I was single, I’d still know how to cook, do laundry, do dishes, etc. It doesn’t take a partner to know how to take care of yourself and help others around you

In our house, if I cook then my wife does the dishes HOWEVER I always tidy up as I cook. Put things back in the fridge, handle trash, put dishes in sink, etc. I’d never leave such a mess for someone

Everyone in the comments defending him, I’m 22 and RELATE TO HER. I spent almost four years with someone, almost married him even. We have dogs together, one has bad storm anxiety and the other is on medication currently, he let their shit sit on the floor for hours just so he could play the game. According to him, because he pays the bills I have to clean the entire house daily (I also work and in the process of packing to move), yesterday during an argument he told me to get out because I told him when I move I’m ending the lease because I can’t justify sending him $550/month until the lease is over when I haven’t had a single helping hand since moving into the house and our previous house. Don’t even have kids and the house looks like I have three toddlers because he won’t help me. He hasn’t done his laundry in over a month but gets mad because I have to wash my clothes twice a week (major weight loss, can’t afford new clothes so I’m very limited on what fits me). Now I’m engaged to someone who actually shows me he appreciates me, marrying him next month. He helped me clean a house that isn’t even his over the weekend and we’re buying a house together.
