🚨Your front shin doesn’t NEED to be parallel to your mat in Half Pigeon!🚨 I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again (probably forever). “Correct” alignment is a myth unless it’s correct for YOUR unique body. If your knee screams at you or you topple over every time you come into Half Pigeon, it might be time to stop jamming your body into the pose and start adapting the pose to fit your body instead. Pigeon Pose is meant to stretch your piriformis (that tiny muscle deep in your butt) and your outer hip complex, not jack up your knee in the name of aesthetics. Forcing your shin to be parallel to the top of your mat, especially if you’ve got tighter hips, puts unnecessary torque on your outer knee. While that often gets misinterpreted as a “good stretch,” it’s actually just unnecessary strain. If you feel tension/pulling/stretching in your knee, that’s an indication to come out of the shape. Try this instead: 💥Bring your front foot closer to your groin so your shin is more on an angle. 💥 Place your front knee outside of your front shoulder so you don't tip over. 💥 If you want or need more support, a folded blanket or block underneath your front hip works wonders! Your hip may get closer to the floor with time, but the goal of this pose isn't to have your butt cheek on the floor. The goal of this pose is to create space in your hips without sacrificing your knees. If you're over the one-size-fits-all approach to yoga and ready to practice in a way that actually works for YOUR body, my No Bullsh*t Yoga Pose Library is gonna change your practice forever! Packed with detailed step-by-step breakdowns of over 90 of the most common yoga poses, you'll learn cues that actually make sense, and how to adapt every pose to your unique body so you never have to suffer through another
