To say Frieren was robbed is an understatement. Here you have a character who is the antithesis of Sung Jin Woo; an elf who goes from a complete lack of understanding of people and their values, to one that has learned humans are beings that try to make the most out of their short lifespans by playing the best possible hand out of the cards that they were dealt. Sung Jin Woo on the other hand is a character that loses more value and meaning the longer the series progresses, rarely showing any emotion after his initial transformation outside of the moment his mother awoke from her coma. One learns about and tries to understand humans as time progresses where the other begins to devalue human life that is not of relation to him or he doesn't deem as being of value to him. One becomes more human while the other strays further from it. Generally speaking, being able to make a character that isn't human more human-like and being able to not only empathize with her, but better understand her as time progresses is a far more astounding feat than doing the opposite. People are more inclined to like a character that they have developed a positive connection to over time; one that only deepens as the show progresses. Apart from how beautiful the animation was, how well the world was built out or how well the characters were developed across the entire series, the connection I developed to Frieren as a watcher is something indescribable. It left on me what I can only describe will be a lifelong impression, especially on my values and how I see the people/world around me. That's why Frieren should have won.
