One of the reason behind this edit is—very unsurprisingly—the song. I fell in love with Sydney Rose’s version immediately and knew I wanted to use it. Honestly, I love the song in general, but I’m literally using every demo but that damn released version. The other reason is that I wanted to approach the whole theme of waiting. I’ve been reflecting on it a lot, especially because it’s been a major aspect of my life lately, and when it comes to jjk, I think it fits Megumi perfectly. Megumi is someone (to me) who’s constantly been waiting for something to happen. At first, we can assume he waited for his dad to come back—at least in the beginning. When he realized (if he ever truly did) that it wasn’t going to happen, he probably waited for someone else to show up, to help him and Tsumiki—if not take care of them. Then he waited for Tsumiki to be happy, and I think he kept waiting for that even after Gojo took them in. But most of all, he waited for the day he could have her back—the same day he might have finally stopped being a sorcerer. And while living that life, he kept waiting to become stronger, never feeling like he was enough, always pressured from the outside. But, he also stops waiting, in other areas. He doesn’t wait when it comes to justice, for example, and he doesn’t wait for other people to understand his actions. But most importantly (and sadly), by the end of the story he stops waiting for a better life. He stops waiting and hoping; waiting itself very often implies hope—and Megumi had lost all of it. Let me tell you: waiting isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A german philosopher once said that “the anticipation of pleasure is in itself a pleasure”, and I agree—but here’s my conclusion: waiting is beautiful only when you’re somewhat sure about the outcome, or when the journey itself—namely the wait—holds the potential to be enjoyable or fulfilling. Otherwise, waiting can really drive you crazy, like any other state of uncertainty. Waiting for an outcome, waiting without knowing how you’re even supposed to feel, waiting while wondering whether you should hold on to hope or give in to discouragement. Coming back to the edit—Megumi spent his whole life waiting for something he never ended up having. In fact, he ended up with less than what he had at the start. And that wait slowly consumed him, just for Sukuna to eventually destroy him mentally and physically. There would be more to say about the other verses of this demo too, but I won’t get into that. I’ll leave that to your interpretation. Using manga panels as a sort of puzzle (when possible) came to me randomly, which is why the edit itself might not be entirely coherent with the song or the caption. The thing is, I’ve been feeling completely uninspired and unmotivated lately. I’m really trying not to force myself to make edits, because I feel like you can tell when I’m deeply inspired vs. when I’m not lol. I also have this bad habit of turning everything into a job, so I’ve been trying to remind myself that editing is just a hobby for me and it shouldn’t be that deep. On top of that, I’m a perfectionist, and the more I keep going, the less satisfied I am with the final result. All of this to say: this edit, along with the caption, might feel a little chaotic—I know. Also the quality is definitely gonna be nuts.
