@goodyfeed: 51-year-old Chinese national Zhang Kun received a 10-month prison sentence on 28 May 2025 for stealing from a fellow passenger during a Scoot flight. He pleaded guilty to theft after taking S$200, RM100 (approximately S$30), and a credit card from another passenger's backpack on flight TR465 from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on 16 March 2025. Zhang sat three rows behind his victim and struck when the passenger left his seat to celebrate a friend's birthday at the back of the aircraft. Zhang accessed the overhead compartment above the victim's seat and took the haversack to his own seat. He removed cash and the credit card from the wallet before returning the haversack to its original position. A passenger seated next to Zhang witnessed the entire theft unfold during the night flight. This witness would later prove crucial in exposing Zhang's criminal activity. After landing at Changi Airport Terminal 1, the observant passenger alerted the victim and suggested he check his backpack. The victim discovered that he had missing items and confronted Zhang directly. His companion filed a police report around midnight whilst the victim immediately cancelled his credit card. Zhang made multiple trips to the toilet between the confrontation and police arrival, suggesting he may have disposed of evidence. Police arrested Zhang the following morning but could not recover the stolen valuables. Zhang initially denied the theft and challenged prosecutors to provide proof of his actions. Investigations revealed Zhang had accomplices on the same flight, with all suspects scheduled for a two-hour layover in Singapore before continuing to Hong Kong. The maximum penalty for theft carries three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. The vigilant passenger, Mr K Visvanathan, received the police's Public Spiritedness Award in March 2025 for his crucial role in the case. Assistant Commissioner of Police M Malathi praised his actions, stating his vigilance enabled swift detection of the crime. She noted such crimes are often challenging to uncover due to their transient nature. Airport authorities highlighted how passenger vigilance can significantly assist law enforcement in detecting in-flight crimes. The case demonstrates the importance of community awareness in preventing and solving crimes that occur in confined spaces like aircraft. Zhang's conviction serves as a warning to potential criminals that theft on flights will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. #scoot #theft #jail #tiktoksg #fyp
