𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐟𝐬 🌷 📌 𝐀𝐧-𝐍𝐚𝐟𝐬 𝐚𝐥-𝐀𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐡 (النفس الأمارة بالسوء) “The soul that commands evil” the soul that drives a person to commit evil repeatedly not just once, but persistently. It’s the soul that is ruled by desires, ego, arrogance, and heedlessness. The nafs commands us and tells us what to do. So when the nafs has any desire, any wish, any appetite, it simply commands us and dominates us. we are subjugated by it, we are subordinate to it, we listen and follow all of its dictates and commands. This is the first type of nafs, and the sign that a person has this type of nafs is that they sin willingly, blatantly, remorselessly, in any way that they want. - “Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon whom my Lord has mercy.” (Surah Yusuf (12:53)) This verse was said by 𝐘𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐟 عليه السلام after clarifying that he would never claim to be innocent. He acknowledges the reality of the soul’s nature 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, their soul will 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥. this concept is glorified because people say, “…you should do whatever makes you happy, do whatever pleases you, do whatever your heart desires.” there are many people even Muslims now that are doing what our passion desires. If you feel your soul pulling you into sin, you are not alone this is part of the test. But if you accept that pull and follow it, your nafs will become your master. And once it becomes your master, you become a slave to your own destruction. 📌 𝐀𝐧-𝐍𝐚𝐟𝐬 𝐚𝐥-𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐰𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐡 (النفس اللوامة) “The Self-Reproaching Soul” This is the soul that blames itself after committing sin, feels remorse, and struggles internally between right and wrong. This is a conscious soul not pure yet, but not heedless either. It wavers, repents, feels regret, and wants to improve. It’s alive, and that’s a sign of hope. So the sign [that people have such a nafs] is precisely that when they commit a sin, they feel remorse and regret, they feel guilt, they feel shame, they feel embarrassment, they wish they could take it back, they wish they never did it. They may even intend at that moment to never do that again. So they are fighting a battle with their nafs. Sometimes they commit sin and sometimes they are able to stay away from sin. - “And I swear by the self-reproaching soul.” (Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:2)) Allah swears by this soul right after swearing by the Day of Judgment. That alone shows its importance. An-nafs al-lawwamah is a blessing it’s the voice inside that won’t let you drown. If your soul feels heavy after sin, don’t run from that feeling. It’s not weakness it’s faith trying to pull you back to Allah. - “Your Lord knows best what is within yourselves. If you are righteous, He is certainly All-Forgiving to those who ˹constantly˺ turn to Him.” (Surah Al-Isra’ (17:25)) 📌 𝐀𝐧-𝐍𝐚𝐟𝐬 𝐚𝐥-𝐌𝐮t𝐦𝐚’𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐡 (النفس المطمئنة) “The Tranquil / Content / Peaceful Soul” This is the soul that is at rest, at peace with Allah, and fully content with His decree. It is the soul that has conquered desires, overcome inner battles, and now finds its joy in Allah alone. - “Allah will say to the righteous,˺ “O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well pleased ˹with Him˺ and well pleasing ˹to Him˺. So join My servants, and enter My Paradise.” (Surah Al-Fajr (89:27–30)) They are content with the hukm of Allah Almighty, there is nothing else that makes them happy. [But such people are] also doing what makes them happy [because] this person has been molded, trained, and disciplined in such a way that the only thing that makes their nafs happy, that gives it solace, the only thing that it is mutmain on, that it is content with, is what Allah Almighty is pleased with and what Allah Almighty is content with. So its contentment lies in that which Allah Almighty is happy and pleased with. (Continuing in comments)
