Honestly speaking, in my opinion, Joe Goldberg’s twisted journey as a serial killer and obsessive lover could have been very different if his first love had been sincere and stable. If Beck (or even Candace before her) had truly loved him without deception, maybe he wouldn’t have spiraled into manipulation, stalking, and murder.
Joe’s character is fascinating because he justifies his actions as "love," but in reality, his obsession is more about control and filling his own emotional voids. Each time a relationship fails or betrays him, he moves on to a new target, convincing himself that this time it will be different. But his cycle of violence continues because the problem isn’t the women—it’s him.
The show does a brilliant job of making viewers both repulsed and weirdly sympathetic toward Joe, thanks to Penn Badgley’s incredible performance. However, no matter how much we analyze his past, nothing excuses his crimes. Even if his first love had been "perfect," his possessiveness and lack of boundaries would have likely led to the same dark path.
Overall, YOU is a thrilling, disturbing, and addictive series that explores obsession, toxic relationships, and the dangers of romanticizing "love at all costs." 4.5/5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
