I used to work at an outdoor place where we closed if there was lightning within 5 miles. We would close the peak because it was exposed and high up. people always complained because we wouldn't open until 30 min after the last strike. one time I was out in the peak to help keep people safe after we had been closed and nearly got struck. there was no indication before. Just a flash, static all around me, and a loud crack. I dropped to the ground and nearly shit myself. the people running towards the peak stopped dead and were just staring at me when I finally regained my vision. TERRIFYING

It started storming and hailing and my sister and I had to get the horses inside - we ran one group in no prob and sprinted out to get the other group. As soon as we got close we could HEAR the hum and FEEL the electricity in the air it was TERRIFYING we ran as fast as we could back to the barn and heard the lightning crack seconds later. It hit the tree in the field we were grabbing the horses out of - split it down the middle and set it on fire.

I’ll never forget my coach making my high school lacrosse team seek shelter in a metal shed, in the lightening Capitol of her world. I said, nope! I’ll take my chance in the open field rather than a metal box full of other metal items.

1 time was driving home and trying to beat the storm. Got out of the car to open the front gate, it was buzzing.....I did NOT touch it, I went back to the car and waited it out there.

Yes yes yes. I knew to stay away from water, i plugged my phone in during a storm I was recorded to edit it. The lighting hit outside and traveled through the outlet and through my phone cord!!! I felt like I’d been hit by a truck. My phone goes flying out of my hand. Thankfully it was all ok man I learned my lesson. I unplug everthing now and touch nothing during storms.

My step dad got hit by lightning while standing under a porch with prefecture good conductors about 10ft to his left or right. instead the lightning decided my step-dad needed some grey hairs early and a brief tutorial on flight. he survived but was very unhappy.

When lightning hit our house it went in through the roof vent,into the electrical outlet on one side of my daughter’s room to the other one (directly across) The firefighter said if we would have had her bed the other way in her room she would’ve been dead. She came in saying lightning was in her room.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I often watch the lightning app during summer activities, and my club will sound alarm and close pool/golf if lightning is detected within 12 miles. I love that and start to take action if a storm looks like it’s coming our way and lightning is less than 20 miles. However, I’ve noticed a lot of pop up storms that are outside a main system where lightning can appear out of nowhere. Is there anything you recommend monitoring in those conditions as well? I have the My Radar app, so can look at more comprehensive data, just don’t know exactly what I’m looking at.

If you’re out on the water, kayaking for example, and hear thunder, is it better to book it to the closest land to get off water asap? Or stay in the water longer to get to your car sooner? This happened to me and friends recently and I panicked and wanted to get out at the nearest shore, but everyone wanted to stay in the boats to get back to the dock even though it wasn’t as close. Still haunted by what to do if it happens again bc I was scareddd

I grew up on a farm. we had 7 cows lay under a tree during a storm. lightning struck and hit all 7. they were pregnant and it hit so hard it expelled the babies. it was gruesome and heartbreaking.

You are absolutely correct, when your hair is standing up or you are seeing electric current, it means that lightning is very close. When we were struck with lightning, right before the big boom hit the car that we were in, our hair raised up.
