How does agreeing with the generalization "It's all men" contribute to a loving, patient, and kind community? Not only do men need to reach out to the women who are suffering, but women need to reach back at the men for help, and try to meet them halfway in order to be cooperative and prosperous. Saying phrases like "It's all men" ultimately just drives men away or leaves them feeling attacked and defensive. It has nothing to do with one's security as a man. Generalizations are crude by nature. If I were to say "all women drive poorly," then that would obviously be offensive to the women who drive very well, and most women probably wouldn't want to listen to the point I would be trying to make. I think it's ridiculous to expect a man to just accept such a malicious identity. I am not saying that we should just pretend like every man is great and does no harm, but I think when we do find men who are great and do no harm, then there should be some differentiation between them and the harmful men. If there was no difference between a good man and a bad man, and they were just generalized to be "all men," then how can we possibly differentiate quality men and know where to target our efforts in ending toxic masculinity and rape culture? I think it reinforces toxic masculinity when we expect men to just sit down and be quiet when a woman claims that everyone who has the same gender as him, is a rapist or an assaulter. The whole reason why men rape is because they have been raised to never be weak, and rape is an act of power or even strength. Every statistic taken regaurding rapists has shown that rape is not about sexual pleasure, but it's about power dynamics. Men who feel they have no identity or have failed to reach their identity, can only go back to the only identity men have. Which is power. I think if we stop demonizing men, continue to raise awareness in a healthy and constructive way, stop doing all this gender war bullshit online, and most importantly, if we start to redefine what it means to be a man and allow men to be weak, then I think we'd have a really good shot at eliminating rape culture. If you think you have a better idea, I'd love to hear it.
